About the Program

Jack has been building saddles and working leather for over 30 years. It’s something he’s done day in and day out, not just taught.

This program is one-on-one, so everything is built around where you’re at and what you want to learn. Whether you’re starting from the basics or working toward building a saddle, you’ll spend your time side-by-side in the shop, learning the process as it actually happens.

You’ll cover everything from selecting leather and using the tools correctly to construction, fit, and finishing. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is skipped.

Common Questions

Do I need any prior experience?

No. Some come in with no background in leatherwork, others have experience. The program is one-on-one, so it’s built around where you’re at.

Will I really build a complete saddle?

The 3-week Saddle Making program is a full build. You’ll leave with a completed, fully functional saddle you built yourself.

The 1-week and Day in the Saddle Shop options are focused on specific skills or projects, so what you leave with will depend on what you choose to work on.

How long is the program?

Saddle School is offered as a one-day experience, a one-week course, or a three-week Saddle Making program, all scheduled one-on-one in the shop.

What type of saddle will I build?

We’ll discuss your goals ahead of time and determine the right build. The focus is always on proper fit, function, and construction.

Are materials included?

Materials for one saddle are included in the 3-week Saddle Making program. Material list includes: rawhide covered saddle tree, rigging hardware, two sides of 13/15 oz Herman oak leather, screws, nails and glue.

For the 1-day and 1-week options, materials are typically included, but may vary depending on the project and will be discussed ahead of time.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

No. All tools and equipment are provided in the shop.

Where do I stay during the program?

You’re welcome to bring an RV or stay in a tent on the ranch. This is dry camping, generators are allowed, and water is available. Restrooms and showers are on-site.

If you prefer to stay in town, there are several hotel options in Bakersfield 15-20 minutes away from the ranch.

What happens after I leave?

You’ll have ongoing support through phone or video if you need guidance on future builds.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY...

"I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Jack and build a saddle. We really worked on the basics of understanding saddle making from the ground up, and Jack talked about WHY we do things a certain way, which was very important in learning how to do them. I felt like I got a great foundation to continue my career in leather work learning from Jack. I would highly recommend taking a class from Jack if you get the opportunity."
