Leather Workshops
Our Group Workshops are small classes held in the working saddle shop at NonPareil Ranch. They’re designed for people who want a clear, practical introduction to leatherwork in a group setting. Instruction is relaxed and straightforward, with time to observe, ask questions, and follow along as skills are demonstrated. These workshops are a good fit for anyone curious about the trade and looking for an honest starting point without pressure or pretense.

Saddle Fit is Important
Saddle Tree Fitting
The right saddle fit makes all the difference for your horse’s comfort and performance. With over 30 years of experience building saddles and a lifetime of horsemanship, Jack Smith brings expert knowledge to every saddle tree fitting at NonPareil Ranch. He’ll take precise measurements of your horse’s back and withers to ensure a custom saddle tree that fits just right.
Ranch Work 101
At NonPareil Ranch just outside Bakersfield, CA, we teach ranch work the old-fashioned way—by doing it. Train with Jack and Sarah Smith in horsemanship, cattle work, fencing, and day-to-day stock care. You’ll handle horses, move cattle, fix fence, and learn practical animal husbandry.
In-person options include private 1:1 and small groups. Beginner to advanced welcome. Real work, straight talk, and time outside in God’s country.
WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY...
"I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Jack and build a saddle. We really worked on the basics of understanding saddle making from the ground up, and Jack talked about WHY we do things a certain way, which was very important in learning how to do them. I felt like I got a great foundation to continue my career in leather work learning from Jack. I would highly recommend taking a class from Jack if you get the opportunity."
