Cowhand Campouts

Step away from the noise and spend a weekend on the ranch in the foothills just outside Bakersfield with horses and mules, good ground, and good people. Cowhand Campouts are open to men and women who want to come ride, learn a few things, and be part of a working place for the weekend.

Days are spent in the saddle—ride out on your own or with the group, and take part in sessions that reflect real use and practical horsemanship. Nothing fancy, just time in the saddle and learning that carries over.

Evenings are easy. Good meals, time around the fire when weather allows, and conversation that doesn’t feel rushed.

Come on your own, with friends, or bring your people. It’s a straightforward kind of weekend—you’ll put in some miles, pick up a few things, and head home feeling it in a good way.

Campout FAQ's

What is the cancellation policy for the campout?

All payments, including reservation deposits, remaining balances, and rental horse fees, are non-refundable.

If you are unable to attend after registering, your payment will be issued as a credit toward a future campout and must be used within 12 months of the original campout date.

If we need to cancel or reschedule due to weather or ranch conditions, your registration will automatically transfer to the next scheduled campout or remain as a credit valid for 12 months.

Do I need to have a horse to attend a campout?

No, you don’t need your own horse to have a great time! There’s plenty to enjoy, from learning new skills to relaxing under wide open skies and swapping stories around the campfire. Whether you’re riding or here for the experience, you’re in for a memorable weekend.

We also have a limited number of rental horses available — just call ahead to check availability and reserve yours.

Who can attend the campouts?

Our campouts are open to men and women ages 16 and up.

These weekends are a good fit for individuals, couples, friends, and families who want time in the saddle, practical hands-on experience, and a chance to spend a few days on a working ranch.

Whether you’re bringing your own horse or just coming to learn, the focus stays the same—steady riding, real work, and good time spent with good people.

No matter which campout you choose, you’ll be part of a fun, down-to-earth community.

Where will my horse stay and what do I need to bring for them for the weekend?

Horses are kept in outdoor panel pens during the weekend.

We provide alfalfa hay and fresh water. You’re welcome to bring your own feed if your horse is on something specific. Please bring your own water bucket and any tack or equipment you normally use.

If your horse has particular needs, just plan accordingly so they stay comfortable throughout the weekend.

Can I bring an extra horse, and is there a fee?

Absolutely! Extra horses are welcome. There is an additional fee per horse, and they’ll need to be tied, in a personal pen, or in one of our rental pens. Please let us know in advance so we can make space and help you plan.

Mares with foals and stallions aren’t allowed for everyone’s safety and comfort.

Are the campouts suitable for all riding skill levels?

Yes! Whether you’ve been riding your whole life or you’re just getting started, our Cowgirl and Cowhand Campouts are designed to welcome all experience levels. Go at your own pace, build confidence, and enjoy the supportive, low-pressure atmosphere.

Can I ride on my own instead of participating in scheduled activities?

Yes! If you’d rather skip demonstrations or scheduled activities, feel free to explore the ranch on horseback at your own pace. There are wide open trails and beautiful scenery to enjoy at your leisure.

Do the campouts happen rain or shine?

Campouts are typically held rain or shine, depending on ranch and road conditions. Sometimes forecasted storms pass through without much impact and access to the ranch remains in good shape. Other times, weather can make travel unsafe.

We monitor conditions closely and will notify you as early as possible — typically the day before — if any changes need to be made. Your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities.

If we need to cancel or reschedule due to weather or ranch conditions, your registration will transfer to the next scheduled campout or remain as a credit that must be used within 12 months of the original campout date.

What should I know about the off-grid camping experience at the campout?

Campout camping is dry camping with no electricity — an opportunity to unplug and really enjoy the outdoors. There’s plenty of space, so come early to pick your favorite spot. Showers and bathrooms are available on-site for your comfort.

Evenings often gather around the campfire (weather permitting), so bring a chair to relax in! If camping isn’t your style, you’re welcome to stay in nearby hotels about 15–20 minutes away and still enjoy the campout experience.

What meals and drinks are included with my registration?

Your registration includes ranch-style meals centered around our own ranch-raised beef, along with water, coffee, tea, and sodas throughout the weekend.

If you have food allergies, just let us know ahead of time and we’ll do our best to help. You’re also welcome to bring your favorite alcoholic beverages for campfire time.

If you choose to stay Sunday evening, dinner isn’t provided that night — it’s a relaxed evening, and many guests use that time to visit town or enjoy something simple on their own.

Can I bring my dog to the campout?

Yes! Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but for everyone’s safety and comfort, they should be kept on a leash at all times.

Do you offer gift certificates for the Campouts?

Yes! Gift certificates are available and make a perfect gift for the cowboy or cowgirl in your life. It’s a great way to give the gift of adventure, friendship, and time in the great outdoors! Please contact Sarah for more information: 661-619-2982 or email at sarah@nonpareilranch.com
